Unit 2- Eyeball Soup

When I first heard of the unit topic "Eyeball Soup" I thought of the film Shrek as he is an Ogre and would eat those sort of things, in the first film he has a jar full of eyeball on his dinner table,

people usually use cocktail olives to make a drink instead he uses an eyeball.

I thought that idea was a bit too obvious and the people who made the movie in a way have already done it and I wanted to make my idea unique and different to other people.

I did think of other ideas such as a dining room full of vampires then I thought that might have been a little too simple and quite obvious as they do not eat eyeballs but in their house they might have some sort of decoration laid out somewhere for example a eyeball lamp or an eyeball hanging from a hook from the ceiling, I wasn't really sure what to put on the table if I went with this idea.

The third idea that I thought of was a ghost dinner party and having the eyeball soup in the middle of the table or somewhere on the table it will still be the main feature of the design, I was also thinking the ghosts could dance around the table like this...

If I was going to do that design I would have to 3D model the ghosts and that would take a lot of time for me to carry this out, I would also have to model the food, cutlery to animate the ghosts dancing and I've never done that in blender before as I'm still trying to learning how to use the software.

The final design idea that I came up with was an Alice in wonderland tea party, the eyeball soup wouldn't really fit in that well but then I came up with the idea if the eyeball soup was coming out of a teapot being poured into a bowl as if it was an actual tea party that someone was having.

I ended up choosing this design idea because it was a little different from my other three choices and I featured the eyeball soup in a different way to them

This is a mood board for my eyeball soup project, my mood board shows all of my ideas that I came up with, the table size that I may use, the angle of the table I may use and some of the props that I may use In my final scene.

These are some design ideas that I came up with for the eyeball soup project.

Design 1

eyeball soup.jfif

With this design I wanted to draw a bowl of eyeball soup to see what it would look like I also drew a spoon and some alphabet lettering spelling "eyeball soup" I originally did that because I wanted the letters to be Heinz spaghetti alphabet hoops this gave me an idea that I could use alphabet letters in my final design but then I realised that it might be a little bit hard to model that in blender so I decided not to do that.

Design 2

I really like this design however I really struggled drawing some of it because some of these drawings are very small and drawing small detail is very hard for me, I'm not sure why that is but every time I draw something I always draw it in a large scale, even though this was hard for me to do I am very impressed the way it turned out!

In this drawing I included my eyeball soup, a teapot, playing cards, mad hatters hat, some balancing tea cup an saucers, spilled water, knocked over tea cup/up right teacup, pocket watch and a piece of cake on a plate.

Design 3

round table.jfif

I really struggled with this design because of the small detail as I said earlier on design 2, I didn't end up choosing this design as I thought the table was quite small and I thought it would be hard to model the table cloth as I'm quite new to the software blender I would have found it quite tricky to learn the steps in blender.

I do really like the detail in this design as it shows the balancing tea cups, playing cards, spilled water, chair, table cloth, a round table, a teapot and a cake on a plate. I couldn't add the eyeball soup on this table as the table was small and the design would be small.

I'm glad that I didn't end up using this design if I was modelling it in blender the props would look too crammed on one table and it wouldn't go with my scene at all as in the movie Alice in Wonderland they use a big table and that's what I exactly did.

Design 4

Table design 3.jfif

This is the same design as design 2 however this is at a different angle, this is the angle that I wished I used for my final piece I ended up having the camera angle at a horizontal  level which I wanted it at the beginning but then I realised you couldn't really see most of the objects on the table, if I did things differently next time I would do this at this angle in design 4 as you can see all of the objects on the table.

In this design I included the balancing tea cups, playing cards, spilled water, chair, a teapot, a pocket watch, a rectangle table and a cake on a plate. I did forget to include the eyeball soup in this design as at the moment I only thought of the Alice in Wonderland idea and only included the main props that are in the movie.

Design 5

final design 5.jfif

This is a final design that I ended up with, the details of the drawings  aren't that great because I really struggled with the one point perspective drawing and where to put the horizon line, in class I was really struggling with one point and two point perspective drawings I didn't really understand it very well comparing to the other people in my class, I think it was because in perspective drawings there are so many lines when doing it and with all the lines on the page I got very confused drawing all the other things in my scene such as drawing the table, the pattern on the floor, the props on the table and the background of the scene, I got there eventually but it took me a bit of time.

The spiral in the background is supposed to be a illusion spiral a bit like the one when someone is trying to hypnotise you, the floor is supposed to be a checkered floor I was struggling to draw that in my design as I was getting confused with all the lines with the perspective drawing.

If I had to do these types of drawings in the future I would really like to learn how to draw one point and two point perspective drawings a little better and for someone to brake down the steps in a really simple way as if I was an alien and I didn't know hardly anything about it the steps would have to be very detailed.

In my final piece I ended up going with the mad hatter tea party idea because as I said before my other ideas where very simple and too obvious I wanted to make my idea different to other peoples as I assumed that people would do a restaurant or something but I based mine on a movie and I made the eyeball soup work as if someone was hosting a tea party, originally I did think the eyeball soup wouldn't make any sense as eyeballs don't really belong in an environment like that as it's an elegant tea party but then I realised that the movie isn't that normal as it features animals having tea so I thought why not have eyeball soup in my Alice In Wonderland scene!

practice drawing.jfif

This is the only exercise drawing I did in class, there should have been a lot more than this but I did try but I was getting really frustrated with these types of drawings as I couldn't get my head round it but at least I tried my best! As I said earlier I really struggle with one point and two point perspective drawings, there are too many lines to start off with and I just get really confused with all the lines and then I really struggle to put the other objects in the page, I need more practice with one point and two point perspective drawings because I really struggled doing these things when I was college I would really like to improve now that I am at university.

Life drawings

I really struggle with life drawings when we do it in class as I really struggle drawing quickly in a certain amount of time, however I am getting better and better at it!  I'm really grateful that we have these lessons because I feel like my drawings improve every time I go to these classes its really helpful that I get help from the teacher as he teaches me how to draw people/animals in a different way that I never thought of,  such as he taught me how to draw figures properly he said to draw the body first and not the head first I never thought to do that as I always drew the head first and struggled to draw the body and when I drew the body first my drawings actually improved slowly and I hope they get better in the future!

Final Design

final piece.jfif

This is my final design of my eyeball soup unit, as you can see I included a spiral like background as I talked about in my design ideas, the rendering of the animation did not go to according to plan...When I was rendering my scene it did not include me moving in it at all so instead I had to record me moving on my phone as you can see here

I'm really pleased with the way that my final piece turned out, there are a few other things that I wish that I could have included in my scene such as a few chess pieces on the floor and on the table, on the table I wanted to add a pocket watch and a balancing teacups and saucers as I included that in in my final design, I would have modelled them but I didn't have that much time to model it and also there is a lot of detail in a pocket watch so I decided to not include that in my final design, In my scene I did learn how to animate the soup being poured out of the teacup but the animation was too slow, so I decided not to include that in as it made myself move really slowly as well.

I'm really pleased with the way that all of the objects turned out considering the fact I find the software blender really hard to use at the beginning but some of the techniques I managed to understand eventually, I wish I knew how to do some of these things before such as separating the textures to a different part of the object for example with this mushroom I was really struggling to texture the top part of the mushroom to make it different from the bottom half.

I got there eventually it took a really long time to get there, I mostly got help from my teachers at my university and sometimes YouTube, I do find blender really frustrating to use but I really enjoy it at the same time because the software blender really reminds me of gaming, as that is what I really want to get into in the future.  It was really exciting to model my own objects in my scene ! I would really love to learn more tricks/shortcuts in blender as my brain only just learnt a quick way of modelling objects and texturing objects, if I had more time I would experiment more with it in blender.
